Uzbekistan operates a strict secular civil framework under its Family Code. Only marriages performed at the state civil registry office (FHDYo / ZAGS) are legally recognized. Under Article 47-3 of the Administrative Code, performing a religious Nikoh before obtaining an official ZAGS certificate is illegal and penalized. Both parties must undergo mandatory state health checkups (TB, psychiatry, HIV, STI).
Courtship Protocols and Vetting in Uzbekistan
Uzbek courtship is deeply communal, mediated by the local "Mahalla" (neighborhood committee). The proposal begins with "Sovchilik," where maternal elders and matchmakers visit the bride’s home three times. Upon mutual agreement, the families break traditional circular flatbreads (Non Sindirish) to confirm the betrothal.
