The Sisterhood of the Xınayaxdı (Henna Night)
The celebration begins with the *Xınayaxdı* (henna smearing), held the evening before the main wedding. Exclusively for women, the bride wears a lavish red velvet national costume (*Tirmin*) adorned with golden braids. Female friends and relatives gather around decorated trays of henna.
The groom’s sister or mother enters carrying the official *Xına Xonçası* (henna tray). In a beloved teasing tradition, the bride keeps her fists closed tightly until the groom’s mother presents a gold coin or jewelry piece into her palm. Once opened, intricate floral and geometric henna patterns are applied to her hands while traditional folk songs are sung.
The Emotional Climax: The Red Ribbon and "Vağzalı"
On the day of the main wedding, the groom’s entourage arrives at the bride’s home to collect her (*Gəlin gətirmə*). Before she crosses the threshold, two emotional rituals occur: 1. **The Qırmızı Lent (Red Ribbon):** The bride’s brother (or paternal uncle) ties a bright red satin ribbon around her waist, reciting traditional blessings of virtue, prosperity, and strength. 2. **The Haunting Strain of Vağzalı:** As the bride walks out of her parental home, the live musicians strike the opening chords of **Vağzalı**—an ancient, melancholic Azerbaijani melody played on the *Balaban* (double-reed woodwind) and *Naghara* (drum). Tears flow freely as the bride embraces her parents, circumambulates a burning candle or mirror, and steps into her new life.
The Grand Banquet: Şadlıq Sarayı and the Shah Plov
The wedding feast is hosted in palatial *Şadlıq Sarayı* (Palaces of Joy). The culinary grandeur is unmatched: tables are laden with dozens of cold appetizers, fresh herbs, regional cheeses, and hot skewers of *Lülə Kabab* and *Tikə Kabab* sizzling on charcoal *Saj* platters.
The pinnacle of the feast is the entrance of the **Shah Plov** (King of Plov). Dressed in crispy baked lavash pastry (*Qazmaq*), the golden dome is carried into the dark ballroom accompanied by fire dancers and traditional music. When sliced open, fragrant saffron rice studded with dried apricots, plums, chestnuts, and braised meat fills the air with aroma.
